In the fall of 2022, I left my role as executive director of the mental health agency where I'd worked since college to build my own company and return to providing individual therapy. It was a hard decision to make. But four years later it's turned out to be more rewarding than I ever imagined.

Initially starting my practice I was so excited to be in a counseling role again that I aimed to reach as many people as I could. One of the reasons I wanted to return to individual therapy was to combat stereotypes of therapists treating people identically based solely on having similar symptoms and histories. I never wanted to put anyone in a box, where if you have __ needs you receive __ treatment. We aren't that simple. I wanted to keep things more broad.

As time has gone on, I've learned from you how greatly you need someone to listen. Someone to be open to whatever you have on your mind, not interrupt, not tell you you're overreacting, or leave you feeling judged. The trends I see on social media promote treating complicated feelings with complicated approaches. But speaking for myself, when I feel overwhelmed I don't have the capacity to take on anything else. I just need to exist as I am, breathe, then find a place to reset and restart. Many of you feel the same.

I'm excited to share that December 2026 will bring change to Dewdrop Counseling, as I move towards structuring the care I provide around listening, understanding, resetting, and restarting. I want to be very clear that things will not change for you. If you follow my blogs or socials you may see slightly different messaging and if you ever visit my website you'll notice that by December 1st it will be completely different. But to reiterate, there will be absolutely no change to my work with you. If anything, you'll benefit from my more focused attention on the areas that I think are my greatest strengths. And remember, this new focus was inspired by what I've learned from working with you. I'm learning from you what is important and what kind of approaches work best, and I'm excited to make that the core of what I do.

Moving forward, my focus will be on giving people the space to simply exist as they are. Rather than aiming to quickly change the bad parts, I want to help people learn to sit with their discomfort, understand the discomfort, and be able to understand why it's uncomfortable and what they'd like to feel instead. I've learned time and time again, that when we feel safe in just being ourselves, we begin to understand our challenges and strengths, and then find a path forward. It's an authentic way to build trust in our client-therapist relationship as well as with the relationship with the self. We can choose to change, but that path is easier once we've understood and accepted who we are.

This is the approach I've always gravitated towards, and now I want to more openly share that this is what I do. Not just part of my approach, but THE approach. In school, every counseling student learns about Carl Rogers, with terminology like unconditional positive regard, seeing the client as the expert of their own life, and finding the value of deep understanding. It makes so much sense for me to return to this approach. I want to hear your stories, help you make sense of them, and help you decide what, if anything, you want to change.

This new approach requires flexibility. Flexibility in a way that insurance does not often allow. Over the past year insurance has increased policies that are strictly to check boxes, rather than actually promote treatment. Furthermore, errors on the part of the insurance companies cause unexpected fees and pauses to treatment, which have come during periods that are detrimental to the person's wellbeing. Operating outside of these constraints and policies allow therapy to be just between us. I'll assist with documentation to submit for reimbursement from insurance, but I won't submit insurance claims directly. Again, this is for future clients only; my policy for established clients will not change.

I have always loved listening to you and hearing your stories. I've loved being a part of your journey and watching you learn about yourself. I look forward to being able to do more of this, on our own terms, using methods that work best for you.
